What to Do First
- Stay safe. Keep away from wet electrical outlets and sagging ceilings.
- Stop the water at the main valve if you can.
- Call Louie's at (605) 624-2485 so extraction and drying start fast — mold can begin within 24–72 hours.
- Call your insurance company to open a claim and write down the claim number.
- Protect belongings by moving them off wet floors, but don't throw anything away yet.
How a Water Damage Claim Works
- Emergency response: we extract water, set drying equipment and take initial moisture readings and photos.
- Claim opened: you report the loss to your carrier and give us your claim number and adjuster's contact.
- Inspection: your adjuster reviews the damage. We share our photos, moisture logs and scope of work.
- Drying & monitoring: we check moisture daily until materials are back to normal.
- Billing: we bill your insurance company directly. You're responsible for your deductible and anything your policy doesn't cover.
- Repairs: damaged materials are replaced once everything is dry.
What to Document
- Photos and video of standing water and damaged areas before anything is moved
- The source of the water (pipe, appliance, roof, sump pump)
- Date and time you discovered it
- A list of damaged belongings, with receipts or approximate age if you have them
- Your policy number, claim number and adjuster's name and phone
- Any receipts for emergency costs (hotel, supplies)
We record moisture readings and photos at every visit, giving your adjuster clear documentation from day one. Learn more about our 24/7 water damage restoration or send us photos of your emergency.
Insurance Claim Questions
Do you work directly with my insurance company?
Yes. Louie's works directly with insurance companies and bills them directly, so you aren't stuck in the middle. We work with almost all carriers.
Which insurance companies do you work with?
Almost all of them. Tell us who your carrier is when you call and we'll take it from there.
Does homeowners insurance cover water damage?
Most policies cover sudden, accidental water damage such as a burst pipe or failed water heater. Slow leaks, lack of maintenance and outside flooding are often excluded, and flood usually needs a separate policy. Your adjuster makes the final coverage decision.
Should I call Louie's or my insurance company first?
If water is still spreading, call us first at (605) 624-2485 so drying can start, then call your insurance company to open a claim. Waiting can lead to more damage and mold.
What should I document for my claim?
Photos and video of the water and damaged items before anything is moved, the source of the water, the date and time you found it, and a list of damaged belongings. We add moisture readings and drying photos throughout the job.
Do I have to use the restoration company my insurer suggests?
In most cases you can choose your own restoration company. Check your policy or ask your adjuster if you're unsure.
Can I throw away damaged items?
Photograph everything first and ask your adjuster before throwing anything away. Keep a sample of wet carpet and pad if possible.
